A return visit to Britain's longest preserved line didn't disappoint. The combination of steep gradients and Great Western locomotives ensured a wonderful sound track for the day! 'Large Prairie' No:4160, 'Manor' No:7828 'Dinmore Manor' and the railway's class 115 DMU star in our video.
South Devon Railway 1960s weekend 25/05/15
The South Devon Railway turned the clock back to the 1960s over the May bank holiday weekend in their usual delightful style. The event seemed to be a great success, with good numbers of visitors, a well-thought out timetable and a good variety of locomotives.
I hope the video captures something of the lovely atmosphere of the event and you enjoy it as much as I did filming and producing it! Read more Watch the video on YouTube Still photos |

Time travel on the GWSR 11/06/13
The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway is back after its embankment troubles. Back, and better than ever before! The new timetable is a masterpiece; I was able to take a marvellous trip through time, starting with No:7903 'Foremarke Hall' (1949) at Cheltenham, changing to the diesel railcar (1958) at Winchcombe and over the extension to
Laverton and then taking Class 47 47376 'Freightliner 1995' back to Cheltenham. It was this amazing variety of experiences, superb views and friendly volunteers which made our visit to the GWSR such a fantastic day out. Read more....... |

EVLR gala 8/06/13
The Evesham Vale Light Railway held its annual gala over the second weekend in June. It is one of those small heritage lines
that don't appear on most railway enthusiasts' radar. This delightful 15 inch gauge line deserves to though; it may not match the length of other lines of its gauge but with four locomotives, departures every 20 minutes and some double headed workings there was an impressive variety of things to see. EVLR steam gala 7-8/07/12
The Evesham Vale Light Railway held its annual steam gala over the second weekend in July for the first time under new ownership after founders Jim and Helen Shackle moved on after nine years at the end of 2011. The four strong home steam locomotive fleet were all in operation on an intensive timetable which included double headers and 'wrong' way workings around the balloon loop.

No:70013 'Oliver Cromwell' with the Cotswold Venturer 7/07/12 (Video HD 1:20)
The Railway Touring Company's Cotswold Venturer rail tour, taking advantage of increased capacity on the recently redoubled Cotswold Line to run between Euston and Worcester, had been scheduled to run with Didcot's Blue King, No:6023 'King Edward II'. Sadly she was not available, but No:70013 made an admirable replacement. In our short video the 7MT power classification 'Pacific' is seen flying past Fladbury.

Railfest - the event of the decade- 7/06/12
Railfest was billed by its promoters as the 'rail event of the decade', and, although not all events necessarily deserve the titles bestowed upon them, but with around 60 locomotives, preserved and still in service, steam, diesel and electric on almost every imaginable gauge and size - from diminutive 0-4-0ST's to racehorse Pacific 4-6-2s, displayed in the South Yard of the National Railway Museum, this one most certainly did. DSR Heritage Festival 8-9/06/12
The Dartmouth Steam Railway, formerly known as the Paington and Dartmouth Steam Railway, held its annual 'heritage festival' on the last weekend of the Jubilee half term week. The event is something of a nod toward the existence of 'enthusiasts' by what is primarily a tourist, rather than preserved, railway. Read More.

GWSR - 5/05/12 No:2807 supporters day
One of the benefits of being a supporter of GWR 28xx No:2807 is the annual supporters day, this year held on 5th May 2012. The day involves a round trip behind No:2807 between Cheltenham Racecourse and Winchcombe, aboard a specially chartered train not open to the general public, with refreshments provided - all for free.

Harz Mountain Railways (HSB) 13-15th February 2012
Highlights from a three day trip to sample the delights of the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (HSB), a 140km network of metre gauge lines, operated largely by steam locomotives from the 1950s, in the Hartz mountains of Central Germany. The video shows 4 of the railway's massive 2-10-2T locomotives hard at work alongside some slightly more modern diesel railcars and diesel locos.

Over the final weekend in October the Watercress Line provided a star studded line up of no fewer than 9 locomotives, that ensured that the event lived up to its 'spectacular' title. An action packed timetable meant there was little time to wait between trains and goods and engineering trains added interest in between the intensive passenger services. SVR Autumn Gala 24/09/11
The beautiful SVR played host to a magnificent line up of locomotives from the home fleet and visiting locomotives over the last weekend in September. Almost every train was full to bursting, and even fuller behind the big stars of the show but the event lost none of its magic with non stop, all night trains from first thing Friday morning to Saturday afternoon, is this Britain's ultimate steam gala?
